In this how-to video from Petco, learn how to introduce your puppy to his crate.
Crate training your puppy makes good sense. Dogs actually feel safe in a confined area. Your puppy will find comfort in having a space that’s all his. When you can’t actively supervise your puppy he’ll be happy in his crate with a toy. Be aware that it could take some time for your puppy to get used to his crate.
Choose a crate that is just big enough for your puppy to stand up, turn around, lie down and stretch in. If you buy a larger crate to start, use a crate divider to adjust the floor space as your puppy grows.
Introduce the crate to your puppy by placing a treat inside. Let him go into the crate, eat the treat, and then come back out. Say “Good boy!” each time he enters the crate. Close the door only when your puppy is comfortable with the crate, then open it right away to let him out. Progressively lengthen the time he spends inside. If your puppy needs a little longer to get used to the crate, set up a safe area to section him off, but also allow him access to his crate.
Once he is used to it let your puppy spend more time in his crate. Stand near by and let him out without a fuss, but don’t let him out if he wines, barks, or scratches. Redirect his focus by making a high-pitched noise. When he stops barking or whining, let him out and give him a treat to reinforce his good behavior.
Never use a crate as punishment and don’t let children bang on it or tease him when he’s inside. If you need help with crate training, enroll in an interactive dog training class with a certified professional dog trainer.
