Mello – Crate Introduction
If you didn’t catch our earlier video of Melo’s drop-off, go back a few posts and check it out – we sat down with Melo’s owner to discuss his extreme aggression towards the crate as well as some other behavior issues.
Jon started right away on working with Melo and getting him used to himself, as well as the crate. Jon starts by simply walking Melo through the crate – to do this we made sure to use a crate that has both a front and side door. Jon then transitions to shutting one door, leading Melo in, having him sit and then having him break. After a few run-throughs Jon starts to add a verbal command, we use the word “Kennel’ or “Kennel Up”. Jon then starts to briefly shut the door and quickly open it back up. He then starts to close and open the latches (this was a trigger for Melo that would result in lunging). Once he feels comfortable, Jon runs through all of this again but off muzzle. Our first week of training with Melo will be simple and easy, we will work to get him comfortable with the staff as well as going in and out of his crate. Next week we will continue to work on this but will slowly start to transition to some more advanced training as well as some remote collar work.
