Whitefish in Dog Food: The Lower-Omega-3 Alternative to Salmon

Why brands use whitefish

Whitefish gets used in dog food for three reasons: it's a milder-flavored alternative to salmon (some dogs prefer the lighter taste), it's lower in fat (useful for weight management formulas), and it's typically less expensive than salmon while still being a quality named fish protein.

The trade-off is omega-3 content. White fish species have much less omega-3 than fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, or sardines. A whitefish-based recipe doesn't deliver the skin and coat benefits that a salmon-based recipe does. If you're choosing between salmon and whitefish for a dog with skin issues, salmon is the upgrade.

Frequently asked

Is whitefish as healthy as salmon for dogs?

Not quite. Whitefish has much less omega-3 fatty acid content than salmon, so the skin, coat, and joint benefits are smaller. Whitefish IS a leaner protein with less fat, which can be useful for weight management. For dogs with skin issues or coat dullness, salmon is the better choice.

What species are usually in 'whitefish' on a dog food label?

Cod, pollock, haddock, hake, sole, and similar mild-flavored ocean fish. The exact species blend varies by manufacturer and by the season's catch availability.

Is whitefish a good elimination-diet protein?

Yes, for dogs that have not had prior fish exposure, whitefish is a useful novel protein. It's slightly less novel than lamb or duck because some commercial recipes have used it for years, but it's still a valid choice.

Can my dog eat whitefish daily?

Yes, in commercial dog food form. Whitefish is well-tolerated and complete-and-balanced recipes built around whitefish meet AAFCO standards.
