Crude Fat
Crude fat is the percentage of fat in a dog food, measured by ether extraction. Adult maintenance recipes typically run 12 to 16 percent crude fat on a dry matter basis. Puppy formulas run higher, 14 to 20 percent, to support growth. Weight management formulas run lower, 8 to 12 percent. Active and working dog formulas can hit 18 percent or higher. Fat is the most calorie-dense macronutrient, so it drives the calories per cup more than protein or carbs do. Fat from named animal sources (chicken fat, beef fat, salmon oil) is preferred over generic 'animal fat'.
