Calorie Density
Calorie density is the calories per measured serving of a dog food. For dry kibble it is usually expressed as calories per cup (typically 320 to 450 kcal/cup for adult maintenance, higher for puppy and performance formulas). For canned and fresh food it is usually expressed as calories per gram or per kilogram. Calorie density determines portion size more than the protein or fat percentages do. A high-calorie kibble fed in the same volume as a lower-calorie kibble will cause weight gain. Always cross-reference the calorie density on the bag against the feeding chart for your dog's body weight and activity level.
