Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas, often triggered by a sudden high-fat meal (the classic story is a dog who got into the Thanksgiving turkey skin and ham). Symptoms include vomiting, abdominal pain, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Acute pancreatitis is a veterinary emergency. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis need a low-fat diet for life, typically a vet-prescribed formula with under 10 percent fat on a dry matter basis. High-fat treats and table scraps must be eliminated. Some breeds (Miniature Schnauzers in particular) are predisposed.
