Prebiotic
A prebiotic is a non-digestible fiber that passes through the small intestine intact and is fermented by beneficial bacteria in the large intestine. The fermentation produces short-chain fatty acids that nourish the gut lining and support immune function. Common prebiotics in dog food include chicory root (a source of inulin), beet pulp, and FOS (fructooligosaccharides). Prebiotics are different from probiotics: prebiotics feed the bacteria, probiotics ARE the bacteria. The two are often combined in 'synbiotic' supplements. Prebiotic fiber in moderate amounts is well-tolerated and supports gut health.
