The best dog food for small breeds in 2026 (and what ‘small breed’ actually means)

Small breed dog food formulas exist for two real reasons and one marketing reason. The two real reasons: small dogs have higher metabolic rates per pound than big dogs, which means they need more calorie-dense food, and they have small mouths, which means smaller kibble pieces are easier for them to actually chew. The marketing reason: “small breed” on the bag justifies a price premium of $10 to $15 over the same brand’s standard recipe.

For most small dogs, a standard adult formula in a small-kibble version is enough. You don’t need a “small breed exclusive” recipe. What you do need is portion discipline. Small dogs are very easy to overfeed because the right portion looks visually small in the bowl, and well-meaning owners scoop a little extra. A 12-pound dog being fed 25% over its actual maintenance need is going to be a 16-pound dog within a year. The how much to feed your dog guide has the rib check protocol.

What we look for in a small breed formula

  • Small kibble piece size. Important for actual chewing in small mouths. Some brands sell “small bites” versions of standard recipes specifically for this.
  • Higher calorie density. Small breeds need more calories per pound of body weight than larger dogs.
  • Named protein sources. Same standard as any other category.
  • AAFCO compliance. Adult maintenance or all life stages, depending on the dog’s age.
  • No added “small breed magic.” The marketing premium for “small breed” formulas is often just rebranded standard recipes. We don’t pay for that.
