Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI)

Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency is a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes to break down food properly. Dogs with EPI lose weight despite eating normal portions, produce large soft pale stools, and develop nutrient deficiencies. Treatment requires lifelong enzyme replacement therapy added to every meal (porcine pancreatic enzyme powder is the standard). Most dogs with EPI also need a highly digestible, lower-fat diet, often a vet-prescribed formula. German Shepherds are the breed with the strongest predisposition. EPI is diagnosed by a TLI blood test ordered by a vet.
