Limited Ingredient Diet (LID)
A limited ingredient diet is a simplified dog food recipe built around one named protein and one carbohydrate, with minimal other ingredients. LIDs are designed for elimination diet trials and for dogs with diagnosed sensitivities to common ingredients. The reduction in ingredients reduces the chances of an immune trigger. Quality LIDs are clearly labeled with a single protein source (lamb only, salmon only, etc.) and a single carbohydrate (sweet potato only, brown rice only). Some LIDs are still relatively complex and use the LID label as marketing rather than as a true elimination tool. Read the panel.
