Nutrition
Moisture
Moisture is the water content of a dog food. Dry kibble runs 8 to 12 percent moisture. Canned food runs 75 to 82 percent moisture. Fresh refrigerated food runs 65 to 75 percent. The moisture percentage matters for two reasons. First, it affects how you compare nutrient percentages across formats (a 10 percent protein canned food has more protein per calorie than a 10 percent protein kibble would, because the canned food has less filler dry matter). Second, higher moisture supports hydration, especially in dogs that do not drink enough water on their own.
