Probiotic

A probiotic is live beneficial bacteria added to dog food to support gut health. Common probiotic strains in dog food include Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium animalis, Enterococcus faecium, and Bacillus coagulans. The challenge with probiotics in kibble is that the high-temperature extrusion process kills most of the bacteria before the food reaches the dog. Probiotics added AFTER cooking (sprayed on the finished kibble) survive better than probiotics added before cooking. For documented gut issues, a separate probiotic supplement at therapeutic dose is more effective than relying on the small amount in kibble.
