Soybean Meal in Dog Food: Cheap Plant Protein With Allergy Concerns

Why brands use soybean meal

Soybean meal is the cheapest plant protein source in commercial pet food. It's a byproduct of soybean oil extraction, after the oil is pressed out of the soybean, the remaining solids contain about 44 to 50 percent protein and are sold to the animal feed industry. Pet food brands buy soybean meal to boost protein percentages without paying for more meat.

The trade-off: soy is a common allergen for dogs (one of the top eight food allergens in veterinary literature), it has lower digestibility than animal protein, and the amino acid profile is incomplete. A recipe relying heavily on soybean meal is not nutritionally equivalent to a recipe relying on meat protein, even at the same crude protein percentage.

Frequently asked

Is soybean meal safe for dogs?

Not categorically dangerous, but it's a low-quality ingredient by dog food standards. Soy is a common allergen and the protein is less digestible than animal sources. Recipes built around soybean meal are typically value-tier formulations.

Is my dog allergic to soy?

Soy is one of the top food allergens for dogs but the absolute prevalence is still low, most dogs do fine on recipes that include some soy. If your dog is showing chronic itching, GI upset, or ear infections, soy is one of the proteins worth eliminating in a diagnostic trial.

Why do budget dog food brands use soybean meal?

Cost. Soybean meal is the cheapest plant protein source available to pet food manufacturers. Using it lets brands hit a respectable crude protein percentage on the label at price points where using more meat would be impossible.

Is non-GMO soybean meal better than conventional?

From a pure dog nutrition standpoint, the difference is small. From an environmental and supply chain standpoint, it can matter to some buyers. Premium brands rarely use soybean meal at all, GMO or otherwise.
